Jalapeno Biker Billy pepper, created by Billy Hufnagle, features larger and spicier fruits compared to the classic Jalapeno. These peppers can grow to be 45-60 cm tall, possibly even taller, and 40 cm wide. They have green leaves, and their flowers are white. After 85 days from transplanting, the first fresh fruits can be harvested. They are approximately 10 cm long and turn from green to red as they ripen, maintaining an elongated shape. These peppers can be harvested multiple times throughout the season. Typically, they are consumed when green, while fully ripe ones are used for making spicy sauces. The flavor of Jalapeno Biker Billy peppers is refreshing with a slightly higher level of spiciness compared to classic Jalapenos. Fresh fruits can be used in salads, sandwiches, homemade salsas, and chili con carne. Red fruits are commonly used for making spicy sauces, chipotle salsas, and pastes, and they can also be dried and ground for use as a dry spice.
Growing Conditions
Sowing time: Mid to late February
Light requirement: Plant seedlings in a well-lit area. Requires 6-8 hours of exposure to sunlight per day. If using artificial lighting for seedling growth, provide 16 hours of artificial light per day.
Soil temperature for sowing: 24°C
Germination time: 10-21 days
Planting: Seedlings are transplanted directly into the soil or large pots at temperatures above 18°C, typically towards the end of May in our climate.
Temperature after transplantation: 20-26°C
Required pot size: If planting in pots, ensure a minimum volume of 15 liters.
Spacing within rows: Maintain a spacing of 45-60 cm between two plants in a row.
Spacing between rows: Maintain a spacing of 60-90 cm between rows.
Watering: In the field, watering frequency depends on rainfall. During dry periods, water at least once a week. For potted peppers, water as needed, ensuring the substrate around the roots remains moist. Water exclusively at the substrate near the roots, avoiding spraying the leaves.
Fertilization: From transplantation until flowering, apply foliar fertilizer (spraying over the leaves) once a week using a formulation of 19:6:20. During flowering until the end of harvest, switch to a formulation of 15:5:30.
